The first year that all 50 states recognized Martin Luther King as a state government holiday was 2000.
Lexington CommUNITY was founded in 2006 to plan a celebration on MLK Day in Lexington as a day to remember Dr. King and honor his legacy.
Our first Annual Day of Service, in 2014, saw over 200 volunteers -- aged 5 to 85 -- come together to serve over 1,000 people. Our 7th celebration of the Town of Lexington MLK Day of Service in 2020 involved almost 700 volunteers. The 8th celebration of MLK Day of Service in 2021 which was entirely socially distanced and much on Zoom, involved almost 850 volunteers, and served over 2,000 people.
Our mission is to unite the community of Lexington by reflecting on and celebrating our diverse history, our present, and our future to find common ground. In the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, we offer educational events, engage in meaningful conversations, and social action.
Incorporated into the Lexington Town Celebrations Committee in 2014, we look forward to continued expansion, so that our town can be of service to even more families and individuals in underserved communities.
