2024 MLK DAY VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES
There are a variety of ways that you can carry forward Dr. King's legacy of service. Please review the opportunities below. Sign up for these activities is mandatory, and will begin shortly. Please check back soon.
If you are unable to volunteer, you can still be of service by donating food, clothes, and other goods as well as cash donations to the MLK Day of Service to help us defray the costs of the day.

9:00 am – 3:00 pm Charitable Donation Drop-offs, at Grace Chapel, 59 Worthen Road, Lexington. Donate non-perishable food items for the Lexington Food Pantry; new toys for girls ages 6-12 for Birthday Wishes; books, DVDs, CDs, video games and other media for More Than Words;; gently-worn kids clothing (winter layers for kids preferred), well-preserved used toys for Cradles to Crayons, and monetary donations to keep our Day of Service impactful and vibrant

9:00 am – 3:00 pm Charitable Donations Drop-offs, at Grace Chapel, 59 Worthen Road, Lexington. Donate gift cards and new winter gear (sleeping bags, blankets, socks, jackets), and public transport Charlie Cards (to help youth get services) for homeless LGBTQ+ youth; recipient organizations are Youth On Fire and Boston GLASS.
8:45 am – 3:45 pm Donations Sorting/Delivery, at Grace Chapel, 59 Worthen Road, Lexington. We welcome volunteers to help us sort and organize donations of food and personal care products for the Lexington Food Pantry; donated books, CDs, DVDs and video games for More than Words ; New or lightly used, clean children's clothing and shoes for Cradles to Crayons; Winter gear and gift cards for Youth on Fire and Boston GLASS; and new toys for Birthday Wishes. 2:00 - 3:00 pm Youth and family charitable online activity on Zoom. Join a youth-focused discussion and charitable activity in support of Catie's Closet, a local organization dedicated to improving student's school attendance, emotional well-being, grade progression, and ultimately, graduation rates by providing in-school access to clothing and basic necessities to students who are homeless, living in poverty or low income. 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Food sorting, packaging and composting for children, youth and families at risk at Food Link, 108 Summer St, Arlington. Join volunteers in sorting and packaging food from waste streams like Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Wegmans, and others to be delivered to over 30 non-profit organizations in Arlington, Lexington, Boston and Lawrence. Food Link was just awarded the EPA’s Environmental Merit Award in New England. FILLED TO CAPACITY
2:00 pm – 4:00 pm Teens and Adults Helping Seniors. Assist seniors with small, indoor or outdoor jobs and around their homes like changing hard to reach light bulbs or batteries in smoke detector, raking leaves, clearing snow from walkways, refilling bird feeders, picking up boxed donations to drop off at Goodwill, donating food items to the Food Pantry and more. 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Free Minds Poetry connects incarcerated writers to the community. Join Repair the World and fellow volunteers online via Zoom to learn about incarceration, while reading and responding directly to writings by currently incarcerated individuals. Help the incarcerated feel heard and build connection to community. Adult and mature teen volunteers who have a computer and an internet connection are invited to join this interactive discussion to improve education for those incarcerated today. Register here.
All-Day, At-Home Fleece Blanket, Hat, and Scarf Making. Home-based, family-friendly activity making warm fleece items for adult residents at the Bristol Lodge Soup Kitchen in Waltham, Bedford Green (previously Homeless Veterans), and donating children’s fleece to LexRAP helping settle refugees in Lexington and surrounding town. All-Day, At-Home Card Making Please join us to make cards of gratitude to Veterans at the Bedford VA, active-duty overseas military personnel, healthcare workers at Lawrence Community Health Centers, and essential workers in Lexington. The 'Thank You' cards to the Veterans at Bedford VA and the Healthcare Workers in Lawrence Community Health Centers will be hand delivered to the recipients, while the 'Thank you' cards to the essential workers in Lexington will be put on display at prominent locations around town.
